70s Show' Actor Danny Masterson Sentenced to 30 Years to Life in Prison for 2 Rapes

Former “That ’70s Show” actor Danny Masterson has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison after being found guilty of two counts of rape. The sentencing marks a significant development in a case that has been ongoing for several years and has cast a spotlight on issues of sexual assault and abuse in the entertainment industry.

Masterson, 46, was convicted in August 2023 of forcibly raping three women in separate incidents between 2001 and 2003. The sentencing, which took place on Friday, focused on two of the three cases. The actor faced a maximum sentence of 45 years to life in prison, but the judge opted for a 30-year-to-life sentence.

The victims, whose identities have been protected, testified during the trial that they had been sexually assaulted by Masterson, who was a prominent figure in the entertainment industry at the time. The prosecution argued that Masterson had used his celebrity status and influence to intimidate and silence his victims.

The sentencing hearing saw emotional statements from the survivors, with one of them addressing the court and Masterson directly, saying, “The pain and trauma you inflicted on me will never go away, but today, I can finally start to heal.”

Masterson, who has consistently denied the allegations, addressed the court briefly before his sentencing. He maintained his innocence and expressed disappointment in the verdict. His legal team has indicated that they plan to appeal the conviction.

The case against Masterson has been closely watched as it unfolded, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo movement, which brought issues of sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry to the forefront. It has raised questions about the accountability of individuals in positions of power and influence.

Masterson’s conviction and sentencing send a clear message that sexual assault allegations will be taken seriously, regardless of the perpetrator’s status or fame. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting survivors and providing a platform for their voices to be heard in the pursuit of justice.
