Prosecutors of the United States Justice Department are requesting Judge Tanya Chutkan to consider Donald Trump’s public statements. These statements came in relation to the 2020 federal election.
The prosecutors want Judge Chutkan to pass a limited gag order against Trump.
This is a very recent request that represents the most direct response from prosecutors.
The claims come from Special Council Jack Smith’s office.
In the request from the prosecutors, they said,
“The defendant is now attempting to do the same thing in this criminal case — to undermine confidence in the criminal justice system and prejudice the jury pool through disparaging and inflammatory attacks on the citizens of this District, the Court, prosecutors, and prospective witnesses,”
The Justice Department is of the opinion that this order will safely protect the integrity of the trial due in March.
Trump already has quite a few court orders asking him not to intimidate potential witnesses. The court orders prevent him from talking to them about the facts of the case.
The request from the prosecutors comes after Trump made false public statements around the 2020 Federal vote. The statements apparently “erode public faith in the administration.” They also “intimidate individuals who refuted Trump’s lies.”
The Obama administration had appointed Judge Tanya Chutkan. She is overseeing Trump’s criminal trial in Washington, DC. From the looks of the case, she has not made a decision on the request yet.
Former President Donald Trump has called Smith “deranged”.
He said, “Did you see today that deranged Jack Smith … wants to take away my rights under the First Amendment, wants to take away my right of speaking freely and openly?”
