The Lincoln Lawyer: The Plot

The plot of The Lincoln Lawyer begins with an accident that occurred 18 months ago that literally killed the main star of the series, Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), who is legit hooked up on painkillers. Then it shows he has been sober for a year and has stepped out of being the best defense attorney to exist in Los Angeles.

He has also stepped away from his wife, Maggie McPherson, who is a prosecutor and is played by Neve Campbell. On the other hand, the murder of his colleague, Jimmy Vincent, by an unidentified gunman in a parking lot allows Haller to return to his law practice.

Vincent is seen to have left Haller’s practice by populating it with low-level pro bono cases, petty crimes, and a major circus by the media. The media circus revolves around the murder trial of successful game developer Trevor Elliot played by Christopher Gorham. Elliot has been accused with the charge of murdering his wife and her lover.

But here is a twist, before Haller can go back to his law practice, he has some caveats. Judge Mary Holder, played by Lisa Gay Hamilton, has ordered Haller to weekly meetings to assure her of his competence as a lawyer.

Vincent has also left Haller’s office in disarray, which requires Haller to engage his second ex-wife, Lorna, played by Becki Newton as his assistant. Along with the current boyfriend of his ex-wife Angus played by Angus Sampson as his investigator for legal cases.

On the other hand, a determined and hardened detective Raymond Griggs played by Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, has been on the search for the killer of Vincent and thinks Haller or the Elliot trial to be connected to what has happened.

What Makes The Lincoln Lawyer So Famous And Worth-Watching?

The factor that makes the Lincoln Lawyer worth a watch is the attuned performance of Garcia as Haller. Along with this, the actor’s sharp legal wordplay and gamesmanship in the court settings are worth watching.

This is because every scene that is portrayed in the court packs a punch of adrenaline for the audience. Due to this, The Lincoln Lawyer is one of the most interesting legal dramas that you can probably watch on Netflix. As it has the presence of all the factors and elements that should be there in a good legal drama.

The Real Lawyers Who Inspired The Lincoln Lawyer

The character of Mickey Haller might be seen as a portrayal of an incredible lawyer based on the novels written by Connelly. This means the character of Michael Haller is purely a fictional creation based on novels.

But we have conducted further research on the books written by Connelly with the same title, “The Lincoln Lawyer”, which has the resemblance of two real-life lawyers.

The real-life lawyer who inspired the character of Michael Haller is David  Ogden, who is an attorney from Los Angeles. Connelly met Ogden in a baseball match, where he shared that he does not do his practice in an office. But rather conducts his practice in his car, which is driven by a former client.

On the other hand, the career of Michael Haller was inspired by Dan Daly, who is another lawyer. The writer and Daly became acquaintances while both of them worked in the Daytona Beach News Journal. Daly’s ability to portray himself as a busy and go-getter attorney assisted Connelly in developing the personality of Michael Halley in the Lincoln Lawyer.

However, even though the character of Haller is inspired by two real-life lawyers in LA, he can be stated to have his unique personality and flair. But Connelly has described that without taking inspiration from Dan Daly and David Ogden, he would not have been able to create an honest and interesting character like Michael Haller. Even though Haller’s character seems to be made up by Hollywood, it is so because it has the presence of truth and reality that makes the character so interesting.
