The United States has assisted India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission and closely followed its progress, joined the world in hailing the historic soft-landing of the Indian spacecraft on the moon’s South Pole surface on Wednesday.
The US has provided key assistance to the mission, as acknowledged by S. Somnath, the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), at a press conference. He acknowledges the assistance from the United Kingdom and Australia.
In a giant and iconic leap for its space program, India’s Moon mission of Chandrayaan-3 touched on the lunar south pole at 6:04 PM on Wednesday, propelling the nation to an exclusive club of four and making the first nation to land on the uncharted surface of the Moon.
India has been noted to create history as ISRO’s ambitious Moon mission Chanrayaan-3’s Lander Module (LM) touched down on the lunar surface on Wednesday, making the only fourth nation to complete the accomplishment and the first to reach the unexplored south pole of Earth’s only natural satellite.
In a big growth to India’s space prowess, the LM comprising the Vikram lander and the 26 kilograms rover, Pragyan, made the soft landing near the south polar region of the Moon at 6:04 PM, less than a week before the similar Russian lander crashed before landing.
With the Chandrayaan-3’s landing on the Moon being the second attempt in four years, India has become the fourth nation to master the technology of soft landing on the lunar surface after the US, China, and, previously, the Soviet Union.
Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-up mission to the Chandrayaan-2, and its objectives are to demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, explore the lunar surface, and conduct in-site scientific experiments.
Chandrayaan-2 had failed in its lunar phase when its lander Vikram crashed into the surface of the Moon minutes before touching down following irregularities in the braking system in the lander while attempting a landing on September 7, 2019. The maiden mission of Chandrayaan was in 2008.
