A recent legal development has taken place. The very popular Judge Engoron has issued an extended gag order. His extended gag order comes in a civil fraud case against former Mr. Donald Trump, the ex-U.S. President.
Mr. Donald is also facing a criminal case against Trump in Washington.
Justice Arthur Engoron of the New York state court in Manhattan issued the gag order. It prohibits lawyers involved in the case from making public statements regarding the judge’s communications with his staff.
The New York state attorney general brought the case, Letitia James. It accuses Trump of inflating his assets and net worth to secure favorable bank loans. He apparently also did it to get reduced insurance premiums.
This action followed an initial gag order imposed by Engoron on October 3. It happened after Trump shared a photograph of the judge’s principal law clerk alongside U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Trump shared it on social media platforms, falsely claiming that she was Schumer’s “girlfriend.”
Trump faced a $15,000 fine for violating the initial gag order twice. The expanded gag order now applies to lawyers as well.
A member of Trump’s legal team, Christopher Kise, objected to the judge’s clerk passing notes to Engoron during the trial.
Defense attorneys in the case have raised concerns about the working relationship between the judge and his clerk, alleging bias. Trump has also accused the clerk of bias.
