Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, has acknowledged a previously existing issue this Monday. He has stated the importance of Google being the default search engine. He claimed that it helps in keeping Google users loyal.
This was the primary issue in the most recent antitrust lawsuit against the search engine. This once-in-a-decade lawsuit came from the authorities against the Search Engine giant. The US authorities claimed that Google paid billions to laptop and phone companies to stay the default search engine.
Google apparently started paying for its much-desired default status since 2005. The company was now under monitoring for legal compliance. However, Google soon seemed concerned about the Safari browser present in Apple devices.
This Safari browser was apparently sending lucrative queries to big companies like Amazon.com. Pichai said that “We were obviously doing the deal for default placement”.
When he was under cross-examination, Pichai justified the billions that Google paid to the companies to maintain its default position. “We definitely see value,” he said.
The government of the US first brought about the antitrust lawsuit to investigate if Google acted out of the legal purview to maintain market dominance.
Should the government prevail, Google will have no choice than to discontinue certain strategies that led to its success. During Monday’s testimony, Google’s Pichai, was summoned as a witness. He faced evidence revealing how the company operated to stay on top. It incentivized Apple, wireless providers, and even smartphone makers.
“We pay for preload exclusivity on a device-by-device basis,” said Pichai answering the questions of the Justice Department.
